DescriptionFiji QE2 146.jpg | WAITOVA, NEAR LEVUKA, FIJI. Fiji was created beautiful, though, judging from our portraits, its inhabitants are less fortunately gifted than the island in which they live. The Fijians have gone through many vicissitudes since their country was first visited by Captain Cook, more than a hundred years alter Tasman had discovered the islands. Their first contact with European settlers was, as usual, disastrous to the natives. Fever, cruelty, and bad management reduced the population and alienated their affections. Now, however, a happier regime exists on the islands. Good sense, the teaching of the missionaries, and still more the just and firm administration of the British Governor, novo restored both tranquillity and contentment. The nearest land to Fiji is New Zealand, distant about i.ioo miles. The islands were ceded to Great Britain in 1874-The climate and the luxuriance of the soil render Fiji an attractive home to those who do not object to be exiled to so distant a spot. | |||
