uths of Suva manifest onthe football field that furious and tireless energythat characterises the Britisher at his games. Most of the whites are lightly clad, but it isa matter of remark that so many men continue towear their dark tweed suits and their felt hats, un-conscious of any oppression induced by the sun orair. The hottest months are January and February, but these are also rainy months, especially in thedry zones. The dry zone in Viti Levu, the largestisland, consists of a horseshoe-shaped strip, 10 to20 miles wide, encircling the island for about three-fourths of its circumference, and including tliesouth-west, west, north, and north-east coasts. The rainfall in this dry belt is about 60-80 in.per annum. The wet zone in Viti Levu consists ofthe area enclosed by this horseshoe belt, and in-cludes Suva and the centre of the island. Thesezones are well defined, and are determined by thewarm trade winds impinging on the cold mountainranges. The moisture then descends in rain, and

Situation and Climate 15 the winds thus robbed, pass on over the dryareas. The dry zone, however, is as a rule wet enough, and there is ample rain for all domestic, pastoral, agricultural, and climatic needs. In fact, these dryzones are by far the most enjoyable from a residen-tial point of view. The rains of Suva, for instance, are annoying, and necessitate constant provision against unan-nounced showers. They are always pleasing in away, but often a nuisance. A wetting, however, isnever a tragedy to ones body, though often it maybe to ones clothes. No one minds getting wet, forthe rain is never cold, as in temperate climates, andthe Fijian, having only a sulu or loin-cloth as histotal clothing, is quite regardless of it. Even whites seldom dread it as they do in othercoimtries, and no colds or other sequelae seem tosupervene. In the wet zone the rainfall is about100 to 150 inches, and there the growth is luxuri-ant and often embarrassing. The mountains arecovered with forest and jungle
