Description |
English: Three-dimensional human head made from copper-alloy, from a Limoges-style crucifix. The head is rounded, but the neck is flat and cut off at an angle; the casting appears to be complete, but may have been cut down at some time as there is no means of attachment surviving. There is a faint line around the top of the head, which may represent the hair; there is no halo, nor any rivet hole for attaching one. The nose is fairly flat, with a groove on either side running down to the ends of a straight mouth. The eyes are small, circular and deeply drilled, to take inlaid glass beads which are now missing; tiny traces of gilding survive on the neck and lower cheek, and below the nose. The head is quite corroded, and only small patches of surface survive. This is probably a saint figure from the front of the crucifix. Late 12th to mid 13th century. |
