Born on the Grafton estate, at a very early ageI was sent hunting by my mother on a pillow, infront of the head groom ; and, having persistentlyfollowed the Grafton Hounds for so many years, Imay reasonably call myself a Grafton man. The first Master of hounds my memory recordswas George Henry, fourth Duke of Grafton, ofgreat renown on the turf, a most successful breederof racehorses, as turf history tells us. His Gracewon many races, and his great success upon theturf appears to have stimulated him to turn hisattention to the improvement of hunters in theGrafton country. Having so fine a stud to selectfrom, the Duke, in his great generosity, kept aproper selection of sires at Wakefield Lodge forthe benefit of his farmers and friends.
