Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is a matching exercise with 65,536 possible answers (not counting the explanations), as you are asked to match each of eight situations below (A-H) with one of the four panels above (I-IV). A completely correct answer will therefore require 16 bits of information, since #choices = 65,536 = 216 = 2#bits.

The question:

Which of the 4 panels above best represents each of the 8 electromagnetic field distributions described below, and why?

A) ...electric field lines around 2 identical charges?
B) ...electric field lines around an electric dipole (2 opposing charges)?
C) ...equipotential lines around 2 identical charges?
D) ...equipotential lines around an electric dipole (2 opposing charges)?
E) ...magnetic field lines around 2 parallel currents normal to the screen?
F) ...magnetic field lines around 2 anti-parallel currents normal to the screen?
G) ...field lines above 2 parallel magnetic dipoles (bar magnets) seen end on?
H) ...field lines above 2 anti-parallel magnetic dipoles (bar magnets) seen end on?

For example: Is arrangement A best represented by panel II or a different panel, and why? Likewise for arrangement B, C, etc.

solution:

A) III (see VFPt charges plus plus.svg)
B) I (see VFPt dipole electric.svg)
C) IV (see Wegunabhaengigkeit im Kraftfeld.svg)
D) II (see Equipotential by Zureks.png)
E) IV (see VFPt wires parallel out.svg)
F) II (see VFPt wires antiparallel.svg)
G) III
H) I
