Description
English: A view of one of Fort de Mutzig's many gun lines. Battery Number 1, pictured here, was the only battery to see actual combat when, on Aug. 18, 1914, it fired 291 rounds in two minutes at a formation of French troops in the town below. The fire was so devastating that neither the French army nor any other Allied force attempted to attack the defensive positions in and around Strasbourg for the rest of World War I.
