Description
English: Greeting visitors at Fort de Mutzig is this statue of a German eagle along with the fort's original sign, which denotes the original name of the fort - Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II. Construction of the fort began in 1893 during the reign of German Kaiser Wilhelm II as part of a larger network of forts to protect the nearby city of Strasbourg from the French, who were none to pleased that they had lost the Alsace-Lorraine region following the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. The eagle atop this monument is a recreation of the original, which was taken by an American service member following World War II and never seen again.
