Summary
[edit]DescriptionFerrycarrig castle - geograph.org.uk - 1251006.jpg |
English: Ferrycarrig castle. This castle on the northern bank of the Slaney is described by several sources as a fifteenth century tower house built by the Roaches on the North side of the river to guard the ferry and the river passage. See Myth and Legends http://www.mythandlegends.net/newirelcastle6.html and Inland Waterways of Ireland history of the River Slaney http://slaney.iwai.ie/riverhistory.shtml. The Normans built a castle in 1169 on the south bank of the river, where there is now a round tower as a war memorial. |
