n and fertile fronds different; the fertile frond beingcontracted, and more acuminate than the barren frond. The fronds, which are simple, are pubescent; they arc ofa somewhat oblong-acuminate form, having a dentate-serrate 92 rOLYPODlUM SIMPLEX. edge; cordate at the base, and subhastate. Lateral, beingadherent to a scaly creeping rhizoma. Sori linear, medial, in some degree transverse, arcuate, andcontinued across the junction of two anastomosing venules;eventually confluent. Colour brown. Veins pinnate, curved, and almost parallel; conspicuous,dividing the frond into a multitude of rectilinear parallelo-grams. Length of fronds from six to twelve inches; colour a dullgreen. For fronds I am indebted to Sir W. J. Hooker, Directorof the Royal Gardens, Kew; Mr. J. Smith, Curator of theRoyal Gardens, Kew; and to Mr. R. Sim, of Foots Cray. It may be procured of Mr. R. Sim, of Foots Cray, andMessrs. Booth, of Hamburg. The illustration is from a barren frond forwarded by Mr.J. Smith, of Kew.
