Summary
[edit]DescriptionFenny Compton Signal Box - geograph.org.uk - 142331.jpg |
English: Fenny Compton Signal Box. This box used to control the connections between the ex-GWR Birmingham - London main line and the Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction Railway which ran side by side for a short distance south of here. The box in the picture dates from the upgrading of the S&MJ in 1965 to carry more freight between South Wales and the South Midlands whilst avoiding the Midland conurbations. After the closure of the S&MJ part of the line as far as 3989 survived with the junction still controlled from this signal box. On the 4th May 2004 this mechanical signal box was closed as part of the Cherwell Valley resignalling project http://www.signalbox.org/sectionc.php?year=2004 and http://www.virgin.com/news/default.asp?sy=2003&ey=2005&sm=6&em=8&cid=0&nr=12&p=30&kwd=-&newsId=213&pst=- with the new 142332 controlling the layout operated from 118607. (Photograph taken looking west from the public side of the fence adjacent to Fenny Compton railway bridge). |
