Title |
Fenny Compton: Roman eagle mount |
||
Description |
English: A cast bronze bird, possibly an eagle with good green patina. The figurine has a broken left foot, and shallow incised line decoration over the wings and tail for feather detail, with double punched dot decoration running down the centre of the folded wings - similar decoration is visible on the underside of the wings. An incised line details the beak and the eye sockets are hollow suggesting they contained glass or enamel. Although no attachment point is visible, this figurine probably adorned a vessel and would have been attached by the feet (possibly the missing left foot). Eagles often represented Jupiter in Roman religion. This figurine measures 61.48mm long, 21.43mm wide (folded wingspan) and weighs 48.1gms. It dates to the 1st or 2nd centuries AD. |
