Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fenced coke oven on Fountains Fell. Dating from about 1807 this was used to make coke from the nearby mined coal for use in smelting calamine ore into zinc.

The remaining structure is 7 feet high and is about 200 yards south west along the wall crossed by the Pennine Way.

As can be seen from the other picture of this oven 29492, the pointless fence and gate are recent additions. Why the National Trust, which owns the land, felt it necessary to disfigure this construction in such a way is puzzling.
