Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fenced Off Mine Shaft, Melbrecks Moor. The sinking of vertical shafts to access the galena seam was a common method used on flat moorland. The shaft is stone lined and ore would have been brought up by a horse-whim, a windlass powered by a pair of horses. Access down the shaft might have been by wooden ladder or stemples (steps running across one end of the shaft). For context see 890865.
