Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

Many assume that elk are a mountain species, but before settlement in the American West, they primarily lived in open prairies and grasslands. Settlement and development have pushed most elk into mountainous areas, but at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the majority of elk here thrive year round in the vast grasslands surrounding the dunes on three sides. Expect the unexpected at Great Sand Dunes!
