n France. During this timeHenry Russell heard her and engaged her forthe San Carlo Company, which he was thenforming. She made her first American appear-ances with that company in New Orleans, andsang in Boston in April, 1907, as Musetta inPuccinis La Boneine. In the spring of 1908 Miss Dereyne went toCovent Garden, where she sang during two sea-sons. She also made a tour of Brazil and sangin Buenos Ayres. Then she joined the Metro-politan Company. She has also been a valuablemember of the Boston Opera Company, and ofthe Montreal Opera Company. In Montreal shewas selected to sing the title role in Charpen-tiers M Louise at its first performance in thatcity. She has had good success in Tosca, Faust, Mignon, Manon and Bo-heme. Bettina Freeman was born in Boston in 1889.Her mother is French and her father an Ameri-can of German descent. She was educated inthe public schools and began to take lessons onthe piano at the age of thirteen, her teacherbeing Madame de Berg Lofgren, who began to

FELY DEREYNE The Boston Opera-House 367 teach her singing also when she was sixteen.When the Boston Opera enterprise waslaunched Madame Lofgren took her youngpupil to the opera school, and after some coach-ing with Minetti and Conti, Miss Freeman madeher debut as Siebel in Faust, and sang withthe Boston Opera Company for one season.Seeking an opportunity for larger parts shewent to New York where she was engaged forthe Quinlan Opera Company, and made a tourthrough England and Scotland, singing leadingparts, — Madame Butterfly, Micaela, Gretel,and she even sang Elizabeth in Tannhauser,a role considered much too taxing for a youngsinger. Her voice is of mezzo-soprano qualitywith an unusual range. Miss Freeman had a rather unusual experi-ence, for in 1907 being consumed with the de-sire to study abroad, she went to Paris, tookthree or four lessons, was taken ill, and re-turned to Boston in time to resume her lessons,in the fall, with Madame Lofgren.
