    • The French army wears field uniforms in khaki color, only the foot hunters and the Alpine hunters have dark blue field jackets and trousers. The soldiers of the tank divisions and the mechanized cavalry units wear brown leather packs. The stocks of khaki-colored uniforms were not sufficient to outfit the entire army during mobilization. Therefore, a larger quantity of the horizon blue uniform had to be used. Many units of the 3rd wave, as well as the home army units, were dressed in this.
The branch of service and the regiment number of the soldiers can be recognized by the collar mirror. Their patterns and colors have been in use for the past 20 years. As a result, the current equipment is not uniform. As of August 1st, there are units that are dressed in issued uniforms, with different insignias from units in field uniforms.
The rank insignia are made of braids, which are attached or buttoned on the sleeves of leather jackets, capes, etc., on the front side. Additionally, rank insignia can be found on the field caps of all ranks up to colonel and on the hats of generals. The sleeve patches of non-commissioned officers and enlisted personnel differ on field and dress uniforms.
Details about weapon and rank insignia are included in the pocketbook "French Army," which is issued to all units.
  • In 1940, the French uniform largely followed that of the 1915 soldier with slight "improvements," the most notable change being the color transitioning from blue to khaki green, considered more functional. The uniform consisted of: Adrian model 1926 helmet; police pap made of cloth; single-row buttoned coat, Model 1938, equipped with the new model shoulder strap; model 1935 shirt; "Regatta" model 1935 tie, length: 1.40m, width at the ends: 6cm; white flannel belt; model 1938 pants, known as "golf pants", made of gabardine cloth; leg wraps (from May 1940, in certain units, gaiters replaced leg wraps); and marching boots model 1917.
