Poulsen arc radio transmitter
Summary
[edit]DescriptionFederal 5 kW Poulsen arc transmitter.jpg |
English: 5 kilowatt Poulsen arc radio transmitter manufactured by The Federal Telegraph Co for the US Navy during World War 1. The Poulsen arc transmitter, invented by Valdamar Poulsen in 1904 and used until the 1920s, was the first transmitter that could produce continuous sinusoidal waves that could be modulated to carry sound. It generated radio waves using a continuous electric arc in a strong magnetic field in an atmosphere of hydrogen gas. The negative resistance of the arc excited oscillations in a tuned circuit. Shown are the arc chamber (left), the tank circuit (right) and the control panel (center). The arc chamber is sandwiched between the poles of electromagnets (top and bottom) which generate the magnetic field. The anode electrode (assembly on left side of chamber) is hollow and cooling water is circulated through it from the hoses at left. |
