ome.Hardy indeed is he and no stress of weatherseems to trouble him. He is the only residentawake when the sleepy prowler, planning deathand destruction to the sea ducks, is headed forhis hiding place among the rocks, and in thegray mist rising from the ocean he looks to theheavy eyes of the gunner almost as large as aduck himself. Easy of approach and fearless because seldommolested, since on account of timing their visitsto our coasts during the winter season the shore-bird shooter entirely misses seeing them andthe winter gunner is after larger game, theypay little heed to an approaching boat. A gen-erous supply of suitable clothing keeps themcomfortable in any weather. They may be seendozing complacently in the sun on a winter af-ternoon when the mercury has gone down out ofsight in the glass, for their homes and chosenhaunts are in the north, and only the closingup of those waters by the winters ice forcesthem into our latitudes at all. Above, colored on the centres of thefeathers a deep bluish black with a purplishgloss, the edges and tips of the the feathers blu-ish ash. Greater, middle and lesser wing cov-erts and scapulars white-edged. Primaries andtail feathers dusky. Below, the throat andbreast bluish ash, this color extending alongthe sides, paler and whitening on the edges ofthe feathers. Remaining lower parts mainlywhite.
