ed tailfeathers. 300 FEATHERED GAME The Widgeon is from eighteen to twenty-twoinches long and in extent varies from thirty tothirty-two inches. On rare occasions the European widgeonvisits us. The male of this species varies con-siderably from the male of the American bird.The principal differences in coloring of the twospecies are found in the markings of the headand neck; the Old Worlds representative hasthe forehead and crown creamy or buffy whiteand on the sides of the head and neck is markedwith rufous. There is no decided stripe ofgreen behind the eye, though a few spottingsof metallic color show here. The females of the two are hardly distin-guished from each other. THE GREEN-WINGED TEAL. (Nettion carolinensis.) The Teals are among the smallest of theirtribe, and among the finest in point of food qual-ities and in beauty of plumage. Rarely the Euro-pean Teal is taken in our eastern waters. Allhave the same traits in common, decoying well,flying at great speed in compact flocks, close tothe water. Surface feeders, fastidious in theirchoice of food, living on the wild grains andseeds of the marshes and the menu of the freshwater ponds, their flesh is second to none ofthe family in tenderness and good flavor. The Teals are said to breed readily and thrivewell in captivity. If this is so, surely theirbeauty should at once find them a place withthe breeders of fancy fowl.
