When you flush him he goes skimming awayjust above the water; alighting on a rock at theedge, he stretches his wings aloft to their full-est extent, then carefully folds them so thateach feather is in its proper place, and beginsfeeding again, gathering the insects, slugs andwater bugs with the healthy appetite commonto all citizens of the great out-of-doors. He is a beautiful bird, though modestly ap-pareled; something smaller than either win-ter or summer yellow-legs, but built on thesame graceful lines and plainly showing all thecharacteristics of his family—long in the legs,strong of wing, and equally good at the table asare the other two. I think he makes a good im-pression when, after being skinned, wrapped ina thin piece of fat pork and enclosed in a big po-tato he has been well baked. Just then a slightmotion catches your eye and what had seemeda small lump of mud suddenly changes into avery lively little bird, bobbing and bowing atyou very politely and not more than twentyyards away. Now he extends his wings up-ward to their full spread and jets his tail as heruns nimbly along, then one downward strokeof his pinions and he rises lightly from theground and skims away just above the surfaceof the pool. Perhaps he is a young bird or hasbeen but little disturbed and so knows not thedanger of his situation, in which case he may goten yards and alight again to gaze with curi-ous eyes.
