Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1911, this Commercial-style building was constructed for L. H. Fawkes to house the first Automobile showroom in Minneapolis. The building, which sits on an irregularly-shaped site, once stood at a complex intersection, which has since been heavily reconfigured thanks to the construction of Interstate 94 through the area in the mid-20th Century. The building features a white terra cotta facade with decorative pilasters and trim banding, a parapet with decorative panels, a bonnet roof at the southwest corner, window bays home to three windows separated by metal trim and decorative metal spandrel panels, and large storefronts on the ground floor, separated by corinthian pilasters and featuring metal canopies at the entrances to the upper floor spaces. The building was extended several times to the north, with three additional buildings, clad in brick and terra cotta, and featuring Classical Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Commercial-style details were built along Hennepin Avenue to house additional space for the car dealership, today functioning as commercial structure home to a variety of businesses. The building is a contributing structure in the Harmon Place Local Historic District, designated by the City of Minneapolis in 2001.
