These trout are all small, averaging sixto eight inches, but are quite gamy andvery free biters. The golden trout of Vol-cano Creek is the handsomest and gamest.Of this fish Dr. Evermann says: This Is the most beautiful of all thetrouts; the brilliancy and richness of thecoloration is not equaled in any otherknown species. . . In form it Is no lessbeautiful; its lines are perfect, the fins largeand well proportioned, and the caudalpeduncle strong; all fitting It admirablyfor life In the turbulent waters in which itdwells. It is a small fish, however. Thelargest example collected by us was elevenand one-fourth inches In total length, andthe heaviest one weighed ten ounces.114

The Trout As a game-fish the golden trout Is oneof the best. It will rise to any kind of lure,Including the artificial fly, and at any timeof day. A No. lo fly is large enough, per-haps too large; No. 12 or even smaller Ismuch better. In the morning and again inthe evening It would take the fly with arush and make a good fight, jumping fre-quently when permitted to do so; duringthe middle of the day it rose more de-liberately and could sometimes only betempted with grasshoppers. It is a fishthat does not give up soon but continuesthe fight. Its unusual breadth of fins andstrength of caudal peduncle, together withthe turbulent water In which it dwells, en-able It to make a fight equaling that offeredby many larger trout.
