Louis-Léon Cugnot (Paris 1835, Paris 1894) obtint le Prix de Rome en 1859, conjointement avec Alexandre Falguière. Il a été pensionnaire de la Villa Médicis à Rome de 1860 à 1863. Ce Jeune faune ivre est sont dernier envoi de Rome. L’œuvre a été exposée aux Salons de 1864 et de 1870, puis acquise par la ville de Lyon cette même année. L’œuvre représente un jeune faune titubant au retour d’une fête de Bacchus (dieu romain du vin et de l’ivresse), accompagné par une panthère. Le jeune âge du personnage et sa « vulgarité » lui ont beaucoup été reprochés. |
