Summary

[edit]
Description

The Pottsville Group is a Pennsylvanian-aged, cyclothemic succession in eastern Ohio that contains nonmarine shales, marine shales, siltstones, sandstones, coals, marine limestones, and chert ("flint"). The lower Pottsville dates to the late Early Pennsylvanian. The upper part dates to the early Middle Pennsylvanian. The Lower-Middle Pennsylvanian boundary is apparently somewhere near the Boggs Member (?).

In this photo, a fault trace is visible just above the geology hammer. Faults are fractures or fracture systems in rocks along which there has been differential displacement. Fault movement is usually in the form of sudden jolts, which result in earthquakes. Faulted rocks are most common in orogenic belts (mountainous areas) such as subduction zones and collision zones.

Ohio is not in an orogenic belt - the closest one is the Appalachians in eastern America. Faults are scarce in Ohio's surface bedrock, but minor examples do occur in places. Based on examination of the entire outcrop, this one appears to be a normal fault. I found a talus specimen with fault slickenlines at this site a couple years ago.

Drag folding is present here. At a larger scale, this outcrop has slightly tilted bedding that may be due to fault movement, in addition to regional dip. The host rocks are mostly dark-colored, nonmarine shales. Minor interbeds of siltstone, sandstone, coal, and ironstone are also present here.

Stratigraphy: lower Pottsville Group, upper Lower Pennsylvanian
