Summary
[edit]DescriptionFather Obermaier Church, Oruro, Bolivia (2041876393).jpg |
These churches are the work of one determined Roman Catholic priest, the Rev. Sebastian Obermaier, a native of Bavaria who has spent 27 years here and, in that time, has seen El Alto grow from a small town to a bustling, chaotic city with an overwhelmingly indigenous population of 750,000, mostly Aymara Indians. Father Obermaier, 70, is the designer, builder, fund-raiser and driving force behind the flurry of constructions that, because of their eclectic and improvised style, are difficult to define. But what they share is sheer size - spires that tower, sanctuaries that dwarf adjacent homes, bell towers that compete for attention with the snow-capped Andes. They also feature fanciful colors: pink or aqua-green trims, orange columns, bright white exteriors. travel.nytimes.com/2005/03/02/arts/design/02chur.html?_r=...
