One of the reasons I like Minolta so much is that you can find fast manual focus prime lenses at "affordable" prices - more reasonable at least than their equivalents from other popular brands. The 28 is the 1975 MC W.Rokkor-X. It is beautifully made, metallic, heavy at 340g. Even the front cap is metal. The perfectly-damped focus runs from 0.3m to infinity in a 45-degree turn (it's more like 120 on the f/2.8 MD Rokkor version I have). Ten elements in nine groups. The 85mm f/2 MD Rokkor was introduced in 1981. Feeling solid but cheaper by comparison, the focus is a bit heavy (may just be this example), almost 180 degrees this time from 0.85m to infinity, and the aperture ring is now clattery plastic. If turned quickly it could be used to attract (or repel) certain species of waterfowl. Previous owners seem to have used pliers to unmount the lens. Even the red mount index dot has been broken off. The glass, however, is immaculate. |
