Title
Farthinghoe: Late Roman / early Saxon buckle
Description
English: A cast copper alloy D-shaped buckle. The buckle is zoomorphic in design and can be classified as a Type 1A 'dolphin' buckle according to Chris Marshall. Most of the pin bar is missing, but otherwise the buckle is in very good condition.

It has been suggested that these 'dolphin' style buckles may be related to Roman military attire, and their distribution may suggest military sites and/or manoeuvres (Marshall). It has also been suggested that these buckles are transitional, as their design displays both Roman and Saxon styles. It is suggested that this buckle falls into the latter group, dating to the 4th - 5th centuries AD.

The buckle measures 32.05mm long, 34.01mm wide and 3.77mm thick. It weighs 8.7gms.
