. These engines are made in two styles, simple doublecylinder and cross compound. The double cylinder andcross compound style have been very successfully adaptedto traction engine purposes with certain advantages thatno other style of traction engine has. With two cylindersand two pistons placed side by side, with crank pins atright angles on the shaft, there can be no dead centers, atwhich an engine will be completely stuck. Then suddenstarting is liable to throw off the main belt. With a dou-ble cylinder engine the starting is always gradual andeasy, and never fails. The same is equally true of the cross compound, whichhas the advantage of using the steam expansi\^ely in thelow pressure cylinder. In case of need the livt .vx o Q

The engme is placed on top of the firebox portion ofthe boiler, and the weight is nicely balanced so that itcomes on both sides alike. ?36 YOUNG ENGINEERS GUIDE. The gearing is attached to the axle and countershaftwhich extend across the engine. The compensating gearis strong and well covered from dirt. The gearing is thegear type, axle turning with the drivers. There is anindependent pump; also injector, and all attachments. Theband wheel being on the steering wheel or right side ofthe engine, makes it easy to line up to a threshing ma-chine. Engine frame is of the Corliss pattern; boiler oflocomotive type, and extra strongly built. THE RUMELY TRACTION ENGINE. The most striking peculiarity is that the engine ismounted on the boiler differently from most side cranktraction engines, the cylinder being forward and theshaft at the rear. This brings the gearing nearer thetraction wheels and reduces its weight and complication.
