English: Maryam, an Afghan mother of two girls enrolled in the Farah Hospital Supplemental Feeding Program, receives her daughters' weekly doses of Qavi Ghiza (Pashtu for "Strong Food"), Jan. 16, Farah, Afghanistan. Maryam's daughters have been enrolled in the program designed to help malnourished children gain weight to and become better able to tolerate an age-appropriate diet for four weeks now. She says both girls are growing and becoming stronger, and that they like to eat the supplemental food dry. The "peanut balls", a combination of peanuts, powdered milk, white sugar, cooking oil and multi-vitamins, are mixed together to produce a 600 calorie per serving dietary supplement that can be served dry or mixed with water or other soft substances such as pudding. The Feeding Program was initiated by the Farah Provincial Reconstruction Team and has since been taken over by the Farah Hospital, Oct. 31, 2009. Periodically, the PRT Medical Team visits the hospital to inventory supplies and to ensure the hospital staff is continuing to educate the Afghan parents about nutrition and diet.
