Jan 21st 1832. Saturday
 Dearest Papa,
Snow, snow, snow, oh dismal! what a change from the four or five enchanting days we have had when one could hardly believe that it was not Spring, so bright was the sun, and so mild the air!  The common was about putting on its green mantle, quite gaily, except a few patches of the old one of snow, which peeped through here and there; but now alas! such flattering prospects are entirely dispersed.  no warm sunny days now, for invalids to promenade up & down Beacon St, on the dry pavements, wrapped up so nicely that not a breath of rough winter could possibly find an aperture to peep through (if any such should come).  So much for the weather,.
We had some hopes that this warm weather would have thawed Dr Channing’s cold, for he has not favored us with a sermon for a great while, and tomorrow I have got one to write for composition, & shall be in despair if he does not preach.  Mother also will regret this return of winter, for she has been able for one or two days to breathe the mild air, as she walked in our sunny street.
[p. 2] I belong to a sewing circle, (for I suppose you would like to know how I employ my time) which always meets at Mr. W. Sullivan’s, for the benefit of poor Irish or any children, to procure for them thick garments of flannell, cotton &c composed of a number of agreeable young ladies who make it extremely pleasant.  I have almost finished my dancing lessons, and perhaps shall afterwards take some of Mrs Mac’Cloud, the mother of the Scotch children of whom we have told you.  There is one new engagement – Mr S. Salisbur’s daughter to Mr Gary Austin. – Mr Thorndike has gone to New York with his eldest daughter to obtain his youthful bride.  I verily believe the sun is coming out after all – John Bryant is going to begin his hourney Monday.  He is going to Savannah New Orleans &c and when he returns in the spring will probably go to Europe after which he will join his Father’s firm. – I mightily like my new walk to school.  It will be enchanting in the Spring – agreeable in Summer – abounding in fun in Winter – and delightful in Autumn – There are four good reasons –
I cannot for the life of me think of any thing to say, except that as night approaches, I do so long for my accustomed seat on papa’s knee, and what renders it more tantalizing is, I often dream about you, and that you have returned, when in my joy I awake and the alluring vision vanishes – Adieu
 Votre filia carissima – Fan
