[edit]DescriptionFancher Chair Company, Falconer, New York - 20210427 - 01.jpg |
English: Fancher Chair Company, 121 South Work Street at East Everett Street, Falconer, New York, April 2021. Located at the center of the village adjacent to Chadakoin Creek, Fancher's factory complex as it is today was built in stages between 1875 (the rear portion, seen at right in this image) and roughly the 1910s (the front portion facing Work Street, at left), and in terms of its history, represents a continuation of Falconer's first business and raison d'être. Beginning in 1807, this was the site of the homestead of Edward Work (1773-1857), a country lawyer native to Franklin County, Pennsylvania who purchased a 1,000-acre tract from the Holland Land Company and established a grist mill and sawmill on the Chadakoin. The property passed into the hands of the Falconer family in 1836, under whose ownership not only was the modern-day factory building constructed, but its output was expanded from the two-inch planks on which it had focused earlier to sashes and doors, architectural trim work, and even beekeeping supplies. The 20th century saw the business re-incorporate under the name American Manufacturing Concern (AMC) and further add to its purview, with thermometers, washing machines, toys, living room and bedroom furniture, and chairs joining the list of items manufactured there. The latter, of course, were the main product coming out of the factory by 1976, when the business took on its present name. |
