imes very brilliant, but generally wantingin truth and transparency, wiiile the outlines sliowrather the hand of a great draughtsman. Unlike tlicItalian painters, beauty for him lay more in characterthan in regularity of feature or sweetness of expression. As has been said, liis art was great because it was thenatural outgrowth of his own genius, race, and time. Little is known with certainty of his early Avorks. The oldest known portrait by him is that of his father,Albrecht Diirer the goldsmith, dated 1407. His ownportrait, painted by himself in 1498, is in the UfiiziGallery at Florence; and another of his father, bearingthe same date, is also in the Uffizi. In 1498 appeared his woodcuts illustrating the A;)oc-alypse. These are poetical in conception, though per-vaded by the fantastic element. They are vigorouslyexecuted ; and, though containing much of the grotesqueand the monstrous, they are not without certain pas-sages of beauty. The most important of his pictures of the year 1500

In the gallery of the Belvedere in Vienna is a pictureof the Virgin nursing the Infant, of the year 1503.It is uninteresting in expression, though pleasinglypainted. The finest picture of the year 1504 is an Adorationof the Kings, originally painted for Frederick the Wise,Elector of Saxony, now in the tribune of the Uffizi. In 1506 Diirer made a journey into Upper Italy, remaining a considerable time at Venice. He thereexecuted for the German Company a picture whichbrought him great fame, and by its brilliant coloringsilenced the assertions of his envious adversaries, thathe was a good engraver, but knew not how to deal withcolors. In the centre of the landscape is the Virgin, seated with the Child, and crowned l)y two angels ; onher right is a pope, with priests kneeling; on her left, the Emperor Max
