Summary
[edit]DescriptionFallingwater (8597188163).jpg | Fallingwater near Ohiopyle, PA, a national landmark (1937). It was designed for Edgar Kaufmann, Sr., who was president of Kaufmann's Department Store in Pittsburgh. His son, Edgar, Jr., was an aspiring architect and fan of Wright's work. Through junior, Wright was able to convince senior to build a house worthy of their store's successes. Wright allegedly drew the plans in two hours after learning of a suprise trip by senior to visit Wright in Taliesin. Kaufmann was expecting his house to be positioned below the Bear Run waterfall so that his house would have a view of it. Instead, to his initial disappointment, it was built above the waterfall, looking over. Wright prevailed, as he so often did. The cantilevered design was a result of necessity--the land afforded for the foundation for the home was far too small for a large house. The house was completed in 1937 for $155,000, roughly $2.4 million today. The Kaufmann's used the house until 1963, when they donated it to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Kaufmann would later commission Richard Neutra to build him a house in Palm Springs, CA in 1946. Although the house is basically in the middle of nowhere, it has attracted over six million visitors. |
