ork properly belongs to the history of the artists life at East Milton. In1862 Mr. Perkins sailed for Europe, taking with him, by Dr. Eimmers consent, plaster copies of this statue and of the St. Stephen. The casts were first exhibitedin London, and afterward in the Paris Salon of 1863. The Gladiator was declared,by certain persons who saw it in the latter city, to be a cast from life, and theattempt to palm it off as a modelled statue ridiculed. The story is too absurd forconsideration, for no artist of any sense would ever have dreamed of such an idea.Mr. Perkins, with all his kindly zeal, was ignorant of the way in which suchmatters should be conducted in Paris, and unfortunately fell into the hands ofM. Louisone, who Avas any thing but the proper person to introduce such a workin Parisian art circles. It is not known whether the casts were seen by any ofthe distinguished French artists capable of appreciating such* works, but they atleast were admired by several well-known critics.
