e these contemplat-ed improvements. The New York, New Haven and HartfordRailroad has three passenger stations on its principal or shoreline in this city and one in the eastern section. These trains are almost continuously leaving one or another ofthese stations for Newport or Providence, New^ Bedford or Boston,New York or the West, and the distance is so rapidly and com-fortably covered that Fall River seems the centre from which allplaces radiate. THE FALL RIVER LINE. The famous *Fall River Line, originally organized as TheBay State Steamboat Company, to ply between Fall River andNew York City, was a success from its inception and has grown inreputation and popularity as Pall River has grown. Its freightand passenger travel have always been particularly heavy andFall River citizens have always manifested an especial pride andinterest in its success. Conceived in a Fall River mind, started by Fall River capital,supported in infancy by Fall River trade and travel, it grew and^ 50 f^^l^

grew, and continues still to grow in popularity and success. It isone of the great Pall River successes that was allowed to pass outof the ownership and control of Fall River people. But its suc-cessive owners evidently understood catering to the public, forfrom modest beginnings this route has grown into international re-nown, and with it, improvement has kept pace with prosperity un-til the beauty of its steamers and the magnificence of their equip-ment have not only increased the natural pride of Fall River citi-zens, but command the admiration of the traveling public. It is a story of romantic interest, the upbuilding of this greattransportation system.
