English: Accession Number: 1985.23
Display Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi Display Title: Falcon with nestlings in pine tree at sunrise Creation Date: 1830-1842 Medium: Woodblock Height: 29 in. Width: 9 11/16 in. Display Dimensions: 29 in. x 9 11/16 in. (73.66 cm x 24.61 cm) Publisher: Maruya Seibei Credit Line: Gift of Mr. Clinton G. Abbott Label Copy: "This extremely rare print by Kuniyoshi shows a falcon that just landed on her nest in a pine tree to feed her four nestlings. In the background above the rather majestic bird with outstretched wings is the rising sun. Vertical prints of this size were meant to be mounted as hanging scrolls (kakemono) and are thus called hanging-scroll prints (kakemono-e). While they were very popular, painted hanging scrolls were costly, and buyers eagerly embraced the development of printed substitutes for these paintings."
