Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 38.1-43.1 cm; Weight: .65-.9 kg; Identification: The head and body of the fairy penguin are a striking indigo blue color. Its chin, throat, undersides, and tail are white. This type of penguin has no crest; Habitat: Temperate seas, inshore waters, rocky or sandy areas; Diet: Carnivore: small fish, cephalopods, crustaceans; Reproduction: These semi-colonial nesters have a variable laying period between June and October. Each pair has two eggs and incubate them for 33-39 days. The chicks fledge when they are 50-65 days old; Social Structure: Pairs remain together throughout the year; Behavior: Although adult birds are relatively sedentary, chicks will often disperse after fledging; Status: No special status.
