Summary

[edit]
Description

A Fairchild FC-2 on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Fairchild was a monoplane with a wing set on the roof of the fuselage.

Sherman Fairchild had established a company called Fairchild Aerial Surveys, in which he photographed places from the air. Existing planes were not reliable or stable enough in flight for his needs, so Fairchild asked for quotes for a high-wing, strut-braced monoplane with fully enclosed cabin and wheeled undercarriage. Quoted prices came in so high, Fairchild built his own airplane assembly factory.

The prototype -- known as the FC-1 -- had its first flight in June 1926. It used a Curtiss OX-5 engine, but this was too underpowered. It was replaced with a Wright J-4. The plane was put into production as the FC-2.

The FC-2 had a larger cabin than the FC-1 (although both had extensive windows), and the choice of wheels, skis, or floats. The cabin was also heated.

A cargo version (the FC-2W with a Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engine and wider wingspan) was soon developed. Richard Byrd took one on his Antarctic expedition.

In October 1927, an FC-2 floatplane made the first Air Mail flight.

The Royal Canadian Air Force also used the plane. An Armstrong Siddeley Lynx radial engine replaced the Wright engine for better performance in cold weather, and the RCAF used the planes for search and rescue, aerial surveys, and cargo delivery. It even used a few as bombers!
