Description
Fairchild 660 limiter (1960s)
Like the Altec compressor, the Fairchild limiter is also a
volume-control device. In the 1960s, it was one of the few pieces
of Abbey Road Studios equipment that was not an EMI design.
Fairchild was an American manufacturer, but it was the use of these
limiters at Abbey Road that helped make the device famous
worldwide.

The Fairchild has a special sound that helped create the legendary
drum and vocal tones found on recordings by The Beatles. As
such, they are highly prized and quite expensive. Abbey Road still
keep their original 1960s units in operation at the studios every day.
Presence Box (1960s)
This one of the more subtle, yet very important,
EMI-built units from the 1960s. The Presence Box
adds midrange and high frequencies to sounds.
It was used extensively in the 1960s to create a
non-natural sound, which we now consider the
'normal' sound of pop and rock recordings.
