The governmentrailroad authorities have decided to discon-tinue the electric ser-vice, but the failure ofthe road has been duemore to half-heartedmeasures than to anydefect in the system. The first installationof a high-speed elec-tric road in Europe wasbetween Diisseldorfand Krefeld, a totaldistance of 13.6 miles,the longest stretch be-tween stopping placesbeing 10.4 miles. Sincethe road parallels thesteam railway for thegreater part of itslength, it is considerednecessary to maintain aspeed of 25 miles perhour on the openstretches. A speed of37.2 miles per hour hasbeen reached on trialtrips. The road doesnot pass through theintervening towns butonly touches the out-skirts. It is double- HIGH SPEED ELECTRIC INTERURBAN RAILWAYS. 883 tracked form Diisseldorf to Oberkassel, the terminus of the Diisseldorflocal traffic. Three kinds of brakes are used, viz., handbrakes, electric short-circuit brakes, and Standard air-brakes, andeach motor car is also equipped with two trolley poles. Trains leaveeach terminal station every half-hour. The road has developed a quiteconsiderable freight and farm service. A road which has attracted considerable attention by its novel andunique features is the suspended railway at Elberfeld-Barmen, wherethe cars are hung from a single rail without any side guards or sup-ports, so that in going around curves the cars may assume an inclinedposition. Of the eight miles originally planned, only 4^ have beenbuilt. The speed of the cars is from I2>^ to 14 miles per hour.
