The road runs from Grand Rapids to Aluskegon,Mich., a distance of 35 miles, with a branch 7 miles long to GrandHaven. It parallels steam roads to both cities, the running time of theelectric and steam cars being about the same. The country is well de-veloped industrially, containing tin-plate and paper mills, knittingfactories, and machine shops. Grand Rapids has a population of96,000, Muskegon 26,000 and Grand Haven 5,000. The country nearGrand Haven is largely occupied as a summer resort by people from HIGH SPEED ELECTRIC IXTERURBAN RAILWAYS. 863

PAVILION AT FRUITPORT ON SPRING LAKE, AND STEAMER OTTAWA, OPERATED BY GRANDRAPIDS, GRAND HAXEN & MUSKEGON RY. Grand Rapids, Chicago, and Milwaukee. In passing through townsand cities, the road uses the overhead-trolley system, for which thecars are equipped with a trolley arm, while upon the enclosed rightof way through the country the third-rail system is employed. Thethird rail is discontinued at crossings, the current being carried unclerthe highways by conductors imbedded in pitch in underground con-duits. The conductor rail is of 65-pound section and standard com-position, and is supported upon reconstructed-granite insulators. Thepower house, located at Fruitport, contains five 250-kilowatt gener-ators, three of which are double-current machines, generating bothdirect and alternating currents, while two are standard alternators.All are direct connected to Westinghouse vertical compound enginesand are arranged for operation in multiple.
