The rdternate trusses are rigidlyconnected to the columns, the lower chordsending in curves, which run into the spread-ing upper portions of the columns, and theother trusses are freely suspended in orderto allow for expansion and contraction. Theclear height of this part of the structureabove the street varies from 3.2 to 5 metersand the trusses have spans of from 15 to 21meters. Most of the columns are vertical,but in Billow Street they are inclinedoutward so as to give a wide enough passageway underneath the structure. It crosses theSpree River, the Canal and several mainrailway lines, and in one or two places itcuts through buildings. There is a Water-tight flooring of sheet iron covered withgravel or asphalt to prevent drippings and todeaden noise. The underground portion of the road runsthrough the middle of the street, right un-der the pavement. The tunnel is 6.24 metreswide and 3.33 meters high, with concretefloor and sides. The roof consists of trans-verse concrete arches, between steel beam?,which rest on the side walls and on longi-tudinal girders supported on a line of squarecolumns in the center of the tunnel. The road throughout is two-track stand-ard gauge. The distance between track cen-ters is 3 meters on the elevated portion and3.24 meters in the tunnels.
