Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Heterotetrameric factor XIII is activated to XIIIa, which crosslinks fibrin in blood coagulation.

1. Thrombin (IIa) cleaves off the activation peptides in the presence of fibrins.

2. XIIIB-subunits (gray) dissociate from the XIIIA-dimer in the presence of calcium ions (Ca2+) and fibrins.

3. XIIIA-dimer conformation changes and its central catalytic domain is now available for substrates.

XIIIA-subunit domains:

  • Pink: activation peptide (N-terminal)
  • Cyan: β-sandwich
  • Green: catalytic domain
  • Blue: β-barrel 1
  • Red: β-barrel 2 (C-terminal)

Each XIIIB-subunit has 10 sushi domains (20 in total per XIII heterotetramer)
