English: Heterotetrameric factor XIII is activated to XIIIa, which crosslinks fibrin in blood coagulation.
1. Thrombin (IIa) cleaves off the activation peptides in the presence of fibrins. 2. XIIIB-subunits (gray) dissociate from the XIIIA-dimer in the presence of calcium ions (Ca2+) and fibrins. 3. XIIIA-dimer conformation changes and its central catalytic domain is now available for substrates. XIIIA-subunit domains:
