Title
Nederlands: De zwaarden van Fabius
English: Fabius’ swords
Object type Sword
Description
English: On 23 October 1854, the Japanese government awarded two swords to commander G. Fabius as a token of appreciation. However, the swords were not ready yet and they did not come into his possession until a year later, when he returned to Japan. Owning a sword was the sole privilege of samurai (members of the military nobility) and, therefore, the gift was, for Fabius, equivalent to being knighted. The photo shows one of the two swords Fabius received from the Japanese government.
