Description

The Tritons’ Fountain: This is the first thing one sees when looking straight at City Gate. It is made of bronze and depicts three tritons holding a plate from which a fountain splashes out gushes of water. In Greek mythology, the triton was the trumpeter of the deep, the son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and of his wife Amphitrite. He lived with his parents in a golden palace in the depths of the sea, but sometimes went to the coast of Libya, where he once came to the aid of the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece. Human in form to the waist, but with the tail of a fish, Triton blew loudly upon his large seashell to raise great storms and blew gently to calm the waves. In later legends, the attendants of the water deities were known as Tritons, and they had a similar appearance. This fountain suffered a near collapse when parts of the tritons showed signs of stress and so the plate had to be removed as there was the real fear that the whole structure would collapse. The fountain remained out of action for quite some time but when it was finally restored the Maltese sighed a sigh of relief when they saw the fountain gushing water again after such a long absence. The sight at night with coloured lights playing on the flowing water is a sight not to be forgotten; unfortunately this kaleidoscopic sight is not such a common occurrence.
