Title
FIREARM
Description
English:

A cast copper alloy fitting from a firearm, likely a rifle or musket and probably dating from the early modern period, that is the 18th century. The fitting would have been located on the underside of a firearm to secure the ramrod or rammer in place. The object is cylindrical, formed of a rectangular sheet of metal bent to form a near complete cylinder. Each side of the sheet has a rectangular lug projecting up from the cylindar, both with a circular integral perforated lug. It is assumed that the lug is at the top of the object. The space between each side is between 1 and 2mm wide and other examples on this database such as IOW-E8B043 show the sheet as a closed cylinder. The outer face is decorated with four moulded ridges evenly spaced along the width of the object and running around the circumference. The fitting has been damaged and is no longer circular in plan along the length. One end is now more ovoid in plan and the bottom of the other end has been bent upwards and suffered a slight crack.
