FINGER RING FRAGMENT
Description
English: An incomplete silver Roman finger ring. Part of one shoulder and the hoop are now missing due to old breaks. The bezel is large and octagonal in shape it then has a circular frame around a now missing setting; traces of a probable dark blue glass remain, indicating that this was probably a dark blue glass intaglio. The hoop is D-shaped in section and its ends have been beaten flat to form the flaring shoulders which are also decorated with incised transverse lines. The shoulders are now distorted and bent back against the back face of the bezel so the original angle of the shoulders is unknown.

Dimensions: bezel 17.87mm by 17.18mm in size, width included bent shoulders is 21.39mm, 5.07g in weight Discussion: A very similar finger ring also white metal with traces of a blue glass setting has been found in Colchester from a grave deposit, which was dated to AD c320-c450 (Crummy 1983, 49-50, fig 52, no 1791).

The precious metal content of this object fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.
