Description A McDonnell FH-1 Phantom fighter of U.S. Navy fighter squadron VF-17A "Phantom Fighters" is about to be catapulted from the light aircraft carrier USS Saipan (CVL-48) on 6 May 1948. Note the deck crewman enjoying the pleasures of the new jet age by warming himself with the exhaust from the Phantom´s engines (arrow by the Naval Aviation News).
