Opened in 1931, the Georgij Dimitroff Stadion was opened in 1931 as a multi-purpose sports venue,first known as the Daberstädter Schanze. Wikipedia page <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steigerwaldstadion" rel="nofollow">here</a>. It was designed by local architects Ludwig Boegel and Johannes Klass. In 1935, it became the Mitteldeutsche Kampfbahn On 6 November 1948, it was re-opened as a football stadium, after a brief post-war period when it was used for growing potatoes, as the Georgij-Dimitroff-Stadium. International matches were also held here, and a record attendance for a league game was nearly 46,000. Shortly after this photo was taken, on 23 August 1989, the last international here took place between the DDR and Bulgaria. (1-1) in front of 5,000 spectators. In 1991, the stadium was renmaed the Steitwaldstadion, and Bon Jovi appeared here before 45,000 fans. Underground heating of the pitch commencd in the 2010-2011 season.
