FALLEN HERO COMMEMORATION - PC James FRASER, Elginshire Constabulary died on 19/7/1878 from stab injuries received in the execution of his duty 2 days before in Grantown-on-Spey. He had gone to a local hotel to deal with a disturbance being caused by a man suffering from delirium tremens (DTs). As he tried to enter the bedroom to reason with the man - who he knew - the man stabbed him in the abdomen. On Saturday 12th July 2014, a group of members of Northern Constabulary Pipe Band - including Supt Philip MacRae, Band Chairman - visited PC Fraser's grave in Abernethy Churchyard, Nethybridge to pay their respects to the fallen officer, and to PC Thomas King of Inverness-shire Constabulary who was also murdered on duty (20 Dec 1898) and who is buried in the same cemetery. Pipe Sergrant Steve Spencer played the lament "Flowers of the Forest" God Bless the fallen officers. PC Fraser had 13 years police service, firstly with Lossiemouth Burgh Police and then with the Elginshire force. A native of nearby Cromdale, he had been stationed at Grantown since 1873. He was 39, married with 3 sons and a 6-week-old daughter and occupied the police flat at the Police Station in Grantown on Spey, not 100 yards distant from the Hotel where he was fatally stabbed. PC Fraser (1878) and PC King (1898) were the only officers to be MURDERED in the line of duty in what was the Northern Constabulary . force area. Both officers are remembered on the Scottish Police Memorial Trust memorial at the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan Castle. |
